摘要

The morphology and composition of the clay minerals which occur in the Tertiary Maykopian formation of the Azerbaydzhan area are described. The significant differences are attributed in some cases to a difference in composition of the source terrain; in others to a change effected during transport (which depends on duration or distance of transport); and in still others, to the difference in the composition of the waters in the depositional basin. In the case of the authigenic clay minerals, the duration of the contact between the clay(s) and the water is considered an important factor. The clay in more permeable siltstone facies can thus be expected to have experienced greater change.--W. D. Lowry.
