CoSe 01424 - a new mid-late maturing sugarcane variety for higher cane and sugar yield.

CoSe 01424 (BO 91 x Co 453) is a mid-late maturing cultivar of sugarcane, developed at Genda Singh Sugarcane Breeding and Research Institute, Seorahi, Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh (India). This cultivar is characterized by medium thick, solid, erect stalk with small bud. It is moderately resistant to red rot [Glomerella tucumanensis] and moderately susceptible to smut [Ustilago scitaminea]. It is an excellent ratooner. CoSe 01424 recorded higher mean cane yield of 106.99 t/ha in 4 plant crops and commercial cane sugar of 13.64 t/ha compared to the standard CoS 767 (63.50 and 7.86 t/ha, respectively). Three years ratoon crop average proved that CoSe 01424 (84.97 and 9.91 t/ha) was superior over the standard CoS 767 (55.12 and 6.83 t/ha) in terms of cane and sugar yield, respectively. On the basis of all these performances, CoSe 01424 has been released for general cultivation in Uttar Pradesh.
