DETERMINATION OF MAGNESIUM CONTENT PRESENT IN LEAF BLADES OF SUGARCANE CLONES AT GRAND GROWTHPERIOD AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH OTHER LEAF NUTRIENTS AND YIELD OF CANE AND SUGAR

Leaf blade magnesium contentwas studied in 30 sugarcane clones at 4,5,6 and 7 months after planting. Differences of leaf magnesium among clones, between stages and interaction between clones and stages were significant statistically at 0.1 % level Mean leaf magnesium percent of 30 sugarcane clones over four stages ranged from 0.149 in Co 7712 to 0:227 in Co 678. Clones showing high magnesiuroeontentin leaf were Co 678, Co 419, Co 62399, Co6304, H 50-7209, Co 62175, Co 7204, Co 853, Co 975, B 37172 and CP 44-101 Low leaf magnesium was noted in Co 7712, Co 997, CoC671, CoJ 64, Co 62174, N Co 310, POJ 2878, Co 1148, Co 775, Co 7304 and CoA 7601. Stage mean of 30 clones for leaf magnesium was found to decrease from 0 241 at 4 months to 0.134 at 7 months. Leaf magnesium had significant positive correlation with calcium, sulphate, chloride, sum of cations, sum of anions, sodium and yield of cane and sugar. Leaf magnesium can be used as an index for screening genotypes of high cane and sugar yield It hadno association with leaf nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and silicon.
