Perioperative Care of Liver Transplant Patients in Brazil

The first clinical orthotopic liver transplantation in Brazil was performed in 19681 at the University of Sao Paulo. Raia et al performed the first living donor liver transplantation reported in the literature in the same institution in 1988. The recipient was a 4-year-old child with Aiagille syndrome who received her mother's segments II and III from the left liver lobe. Living donor liver transplantation is now an established alternative to the chronic shortage of deceased donors worldwide.
