Enhanced clearance of carbamazepine using albumin-containing dialysate during CVVHDF.

Carbamazepine is highly bound to plasma protein (~75 %) and has a moderately large volume of distribution (VD = 0.8-1.4 L/kg) [1]. This pharmacokinetic profile makes it difficult to manage carbamazepine intoxication. We report a case of carbamazepine intoxication that was successfully managed using continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF) by temporarily providing albumin-containing dialysate, and we assess effects of the treatment as indicated by serum and effluent carbamazepine levels measured during CVVHDF.
