Commerce Dept. casts doubt on viability of Mexican sugar agreements

The preliminary results of the Commerce Department's administrative reviews of two agreements with Mexico intended to suspend U.S. antidumping and countervailing duties on Mexican sugar indicate that the so-called suspension agreements are not functioning as intended. Commerce will issue its final administrative review reports on the agreements by April 4, 2017. The American Sugar Alliance, representing U.S. sugar producers, welcomed the Commerce Department's preliminary results, while the Sweetener Users Association, representing end-users of refined sugar, issued a neutral statement.
