AFL-CIO, USW Publicly Seeking New Labor Strategy In U.S.-EU Trade Deal

The AFL-CIO and the United Steelworkers (USW) have gone on record as supporting a new approach to labor rights in a potential U.S.-European Union trade deal, the negotiations for which are expected to be launched in June. Instead of sticking with the U.S. approach reflected in post-2007 free trade agreements that obligates countries to adopt, enforce and maintain core labor standards laid out in the 1998 International Labor Organization Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, they want the U.S.-EU trade deal to promote an improvement of U.S. labor rights.
