USTR Unsure WTO Challenge Of Chinese Firewall Would Succeed

While the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative is uncertain how it would fare in a formal World Trade Organization dispute with China over its internet "Great Firewall," Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Robert Holleyman on June 10 signaled confidence that it can use tools short of dispute settlement to push back against Beijing's undesirable cyber policies. "I think we're looking, and trade partners are looking, at that whole mix of [cyber] issues to determine what the appropriate remedies are. I can't say yet whether we would think a WTO action would be sufficiently likely to succeed for us to try it yet," Holleyman said at an American Enterprise Institute event on the Trans-Pacific Partnership and digital trade when asked about a potential WTO challenge.
