The Difficulties of Learning From Experience and the Need for Deliberate Practice

There is a good deal of wisdom andcommon sense in what McCall (2010) hasproposed with regard to using experienceto develop leadership talent; however,there are at least two areas of concernregarding his arguments on recasting leaderdevelopment primarily in terms of on-the-job experience. This commentary will focusspecifically on issues associated with thedifficulties of learning from experience andthe overlooked role of deliberate practicein developing expertise.
