摘要

Following severe spinal cord injury (SCI) in mammals, including humans, neuronal repair is minimal, resulting in serious deficits in motor control, sensory perception, and autonomic function. In addition, spasticity and pain can be very problematic. Worldwide, several million people are living with SCI, with incidence rates ranging from about 10 to 60 new cases per million per year in different countries, and this has resulted in enormous medical costs to individuals and societies. In the last twenty years, biomedical research has produced substantial advances in our understanding of SCI, leading to the identification and evaluation of several potential treatments.
