ABB went back to the drawing board for its latest motor, coming up with an old idea combined with a modern low voltage AC drive that promises new levels of efficiency. With their ability to match motor speed to the needs of the process, low voltage AC drives are playing a vital role in cutting costs and emissions. Yet what of the motors themselves? Surely nothing more can be squeezed from such a basic piece of electrical apparatus that is based on some of the most fundamental electromagnetic principles? The answer is that there is scope for improvement. Most applications need a motor that is as efficient as possible and has the longest possible lifetime while simultaneously not increasing maintenance demands or failures. ABB wanted a motor that would be more efficient, smaller, with a long lifetime and offering low maintenance, while also being perfectly adapted to low voltage AC drive operation. To find it, ABB went back to a design that first saw the light of day in 1923.
