The world's leading manufacturer of pyrogenic silicas, Degussa AG, has formed the joint venture company Novara Technology with Italy's Gel Design Engineering (GDE), based in Novara, near Milan. Degussa and the former shareholders of GDE each own 50 percent of the new company, which has developed a sol-gel based process for the cost effective production of synthetic quartz glass.Novara Technology's goal is to sell licences for the high-purity glass technology, which is manufactured using Degussa's Aerosil~? fumed silica, and Dynasil~? silicic acid ester. Customers will also be guaranteed a sufficient supply of these raw materials. The technology can be used to produce optical fibres, melting pots for the production of silicon monocrystals for the semiconductor industry and optical applications.
