All vessels transiting ECA (Emission Control Areas) zones from 1 January 2015 need to limit their sulphur emissions to less than 0.1 percent, while nitrogen emissions remain the same, at least for another year. In the short term, most shipping owners are choosing to burn marine gas oil (MGO) as a solution to the 2015 ECA regulations, with only a handful being keen on using new breeds of ultra low sulphur fuel oil (ULSFO). Equipment used to clean gases, scrubbers in particular, are a longer-term solution, while LNG as a fuel will be for new ships rather than existing ones.
