In Asbest city, Urals, there is potential to produce magnesium metal from the processing of resources from the Bazhenovsky asbestos deposit. The deposit also has large reserves of serpentine, an accompanying product of asbestos concentration, which contains 21.1 percent Mg. The main raw material for magnesium production in the Urals, carnallite from the Solikamsk deposit, contains around 8.1 percent Mg. Serpentine reserves in the Bazhenovsky deposit are estimate at 4,000m. tonnes and have increased annually by 30m. tonnes via asbestos exploration and mining. Uralasbest combine and Solikamsk magnesium plant, in collaboration with the Russian institute of titanium and magnesium, plan to build a magnesium plant at Uralasbest with a capacity of 61,500 tpa to extract magnesium from serpentine.
