SiC pay: Silicon carbide producers target higher value applications in tough market

Silicon carbide (SiC) refractories, like most refractory products, have come under pressure from global economic weakness, lacklustre growth in the steel industry and slowing Chinese demand. Around two thirds of global refractories output goes into steel making. Due to competitive pressure in the steel industry, caused partly by overcapacity in China and the subsequent dumping of Chinese steel in export markets, the refractories sector is having to work harder at manufacturing high quality products and advances in SiC solutions are among the front-runners of this trend.
