THE PORT OF Rotterdam used to carry the title of the biggest port in the world. In 2004 Shanghai overtook this position and I must admit that the developments - not only in this port, but in China in general - are very impressive. Are we sad? Of course not, because fortunately we do not serve the same markets and the more transhipment there is in the Chinese ports, the more transhipment there will be in the European ports, including Rotterdam. Although we claim to be in the centre of the world, we really are located in the centre of Europe. It is clear that within a relatively small range you can reach over 350m. people. Rotterdam is ideally located in the heart of Europe with the main industrial centres all within reach. This also means that most of the cargo transhipped in Rotterdam is destined for somewhere within the 800 miles range, reaching the heart of Europe.
