This paper is concerned with the role of model tests and computational methods211u001efor the prediction of loads and motions of ships and other floating structures in 211u001ewaves. A review is given of a number of the real life situations for which 211u001equantitative data on loads or motions are required. Based on this review, state-211u001eof-the-art methods in model tests and numerical computations are treated. 211u001eFinally, some general conclusions regarding the conditions for further progress 211u001ein the application of numerical prediction methods and experimental techniques 211u001eare presented.
