Research in cell biology has often focused on the all-important relationship between the nucleus and cytoplasm of mammalian cells. This paper details a study that clearly demonstrates the presence of nuclear channels using confocal microscopy. A research team at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology (Oxford, U.K.), headed by Dr. David Vaux, performed studies using both transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) that provide irrefutable evidence of the existence of dynamic, membrane-bound channels deep inside the nucleus of many mammalian cells. The group is also carrying out a series of experiments on both living and fixed cells to investigate the origin and possible function of these channels.
