In order to bring pharmaceutical and biotechnology-based products to market, substantial amounts of time and money devoted to bioprocess development are required. Improvements in a process are realized through careful monitoring of key biochemical parameters; in the case of cell culture and fermentation process development, assays center on metabolites that affect the growth characteristics of the cell population in use. Running consistently reliable assays can consume a high percentage of research and development budgets, and can be a challenge even for the most experienced scientific and engineering personnel. In many instances, establishing and performing these assays require more technician time than carrying out the actual cell culture and fermentation runs themselves.
