The representatives of the producers' associations, in their obsession to welcome the Tea (Marketing) Control Order, 2003, (TMCO) are sometimes acting as though they represent the Government rather than the industry! It is one thing to welcome the Order as they believe that this would discipline the buyers (whom they charge to be exploiting their interests at the auctions) by bringing in more transparency in the transactions. But, it is entirely another to jeopardise their own representative statusfor the industrial issues by creating an impression that the TMCO is a panacea for all their ills, especially, low prices. In fact, such a move would be suicidal.
