Organophosphate insecticide poisoning in buffaloes and its therapeutic management

Four buffaloes aged between 3 to 7 yr were brought to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the college with the history of anorexia and salivation after ingestion of insecticide contaminated feed. Clinical examination findings were normal body temperature, restlessness, lacrimation, respiratory distress, pupillary constriction, protrusion of tongue, grunting and tremors. Hemato-biochemical examination revealed leukocytosis with neutrophilia and significant inhibition of plasma acetylcholine esterase activity. Treatment of animals with atropine sulphate @ 0.25 mg/kg b wt iv and 2-PAM @ 50 mg/kg b wt iv as 10% solution in normal saline along with supportive therapy consisting normal saline, liver tonic and rumenotorics lead to complete clinical recovery in 3 animals within 5 days of treatment while one animal did not respond to treatment and died on third day of treatment.
