Genetic variability in mango germplasm of Orissa

A study was carried out to explore the genetic variations existing among the local mango types in Orissa and further utilize their potential in breeding programme. Out of the total mango elites observed, 50 were selected on the basis of the organoleptic test for taste, flavour, aroma and pulp colour. Wide range of genetic variability was observed for fruit size, shape, colour, flavour, aroma and other fruit characters. Dahibasa of Dhenkanal district and Panihandi from Sambalpur district were found quite comparable to commercial varieties of the country with good quality fruits. Sundari type mango elites like Lat Sundari and Dengasundari have good market values because of attractive fruit colour and superiority in fruit characters. Highest TSS (26%)was observed in the variety Lori from Sambalpur followed by Dahipatcin from Sundargarh district. Minimum stone weight was found in variety Nakei (5.9 g). These selected genotypes were further classified on the basis of their utility viz., pickle and dehydrated mango pieces, canning green mango flesh, sucking and squash purposes, scented types, table purpose etc.
