Diesel-powered vehicles are not as clean in real-world use as the official EU tests might suggest - and that's affecting urban air quality. According to figures from the SMMT, it would take more than 50 current Ford Fiestas to emit the same volume of air quality pollutants as a single Fiesta from 1976. Yet UK air quality is barely improving. Figures from London show that in the 10 worst boroughs, 95 per cent of main roads exceed legal limits and 4000 deaths a year are attributed to urban air pollution.
