KIA DESCRIBES its new Soul as an "urban crossover passenger car". If that sounds as confusing to you as it does to us, it may be better to think of it as a tall, wide yet short hatchback. And one which looks very smart and funky. You should also think of the Soul as Kia trying to be a bit cooler. Until now we've seen a series of well made cars that have been easy to drive and easier to own, but you'd buy all of them as rational rather than emotional choices. The company's marketing men unashamedly mention the Mini when talking about the Soul. They're hoping that we will buy it for its looks and image, rather than for just the long warranty. Indeed, it goes on sale here next March with a litany of 'personalisation' options, just like a certain hatchback made in Oxford.
