WE ALREADY KNOW that the Audi A3 is a very fine car. It does everything you could expect it to do and does it with a sheen befitting a premium brand, but without ever delivering anything to get you fizzing with excitement. But could this new, cleanest (as far as CO2 is concerned) diesel in the range change that? The numbers certainly stack up. This 1.6-litre diesel has, roughly, a ￡1000 premium over the lowest-powered petrol car, but offers a claimed 74.3mpg and 99g/km of CO_2 courtesy of stop-start and other eco tech. Combined with competitive pricing against an equivalent BMW 1-series, the car makes financial sense.
