THE A3 SPORTBACK is the latest and biggest addition to Audi's C-segment portfolio. Audi has added 58mm between the front and rear wheels to create more interior space, which manifests itself as extra room for rear passengers and a larger boot. For that extra interior flexibility, Audi asks an additional ￡620. The Sportback is predicted to account for two out of three A3 sales, with the 1.6 TDI engine tested here expected to power around a third of those. It's also the sweetest engine in the Sportback's launch line-up. Audi claims to have reduced the engine's internal friction, and the result is a surprisingly free-revving motor that is exceptionally refined. A noise-insulating windscreen helps here, as does aero work beneath the car.
