Boeing's 747 has needed a rival for a long time. The first delivery of the jumbo' was in 1969, and the 747 has had the heavy jet market pretty much to itself since. More than 1400 have been delivered, 881 are in service and Boeing is still taking orders. But it's no longer alone. In 1988 Airbus put the wheels in motion to create the aeroplane you see on these pages, a rival to the 747.
