There may be an awful lot of territory to reclaim, but there are signs that the petrol engine is turning the tide on its diesel counterpart. Here is one of those signs, brought to you courtesy of Paul Fox of Barford, Warwickshire, who wrote in last week to point out something of a watershed moment. If you buy a new dual-clutch gearbox-equipped Volkswagen Golf GT and pick the new 138bhp 1.4 turbo petrol engine instead of the 148bhp 2.0 turbodiesel you might otherwise default to, you'll end up with quite a car. One that's not only faster to 62mph but also emits less CO_2, is cheaper by list price, cheaper on road tax, cheaper on company car tax and even gets within 3mpg of the diesel on combined fuel economy. That, in a nutshell, is the difference made by VW's new cylinder deactivation technology - or so suggest the claims.
