On 1 January 1898, The Autocar ran a short news story saying, "The Cincinnati Specialty Carriage Company has a contract with the Electric Vehicle Company of New York to build 100 horseless carriages. They will be propelled by storage batteries, charged to last 100 miles of travel." Not much has changed 115 years later. A range of 100 miles still seems to be the best achievable from a practical pure battery vehicle, and recharging is probably not significantly easier than it was in Victorian London. But battery-electric vehicles are, once again, on the verge of making the breakthrough into the motoring mainstream.
