Vauxhall: the next five years

GM hopes to secure Vauxhall's future with a cash injection, but how will the money be spent? A vast ?11 billion (￡9.7bn) investment in new car development will facilitate the launch of no fewer than 30 new or upgraded Vauxhall models within the next five years. General Motors' European arm's financial restructuring plan has been laid out to spur a level of growth that, it is hoped, will result in Vauxhall and Opel garnering up to 8.5 per cent of European car sales by 2016, according to boss Nick Reilly. Alongside the new models, Vauxhall also plans a number of crucial engine developments, including the introduction of a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine and an upgraded 1.3-litre, four-cylinder diesel that meets the upcoming Euro 6 emissions regulations. The aim is to return to profitability by the end of this year and then, according to Reilly, "build upon it solidly over the next five years".
