The main characteristics of coke combustion with a higher oxygen component compared with air (based on the same quantities of oxygen) can be seen in that the missing nitrogen component does not have to be heated up and the temperature of the combustion gas is therefore higher. However, the hotter combustion also results in the process being faster, i.e. the combustion is intensified with oxygen - it becomes hotter and faster. As a result, more coke is combusted per time unit in a continuous process of the type that occurs in cupola furnace operation, and this in turn, results in a greater amount of heat per time unit. The capacity increase results in a reduction of the melting costs while all the other parameters in the foundry operation are maintained.
