Indian farmer needs food for himself and fodder for his animals to continue his life. To cater to his needs, concerted efforts are being made by agricultural scientists in improving and making available both food and fodder production technologies. However, in view of increased growth rate in human population (1.3 billion by 2030) on par with cattle population, research on food production front received more attention than forages. Therefore, obviously the area under food crops occupied maximum and only the degraded, low productive, waste and fallow lands, poor and problem soils which were not suitable for foodgrain production were allocated for the forages in the country categorizing them as low priority crops. However, efforts are continued to tap this potential, and IGFRI, Jhansi has been recognized as a pioneer research institute to carry out research with a special mission of improving the fodder production scenario.
