Ech month the covet of the new-look AVJ will feature paintings by invited Australian artists. Acclaimed wildlife artist Rachel Lewis will provide the first six covers for the magazine. Ms Lewis describes herself as an illustrator as opposed to an artist because her work is life-like and not interpretative. "While freedom of expression is gteat, illustrating requires dedication and above all precision work. I have researched their habitat so that I can present them in their natural setting faithfully," she said. Ms Lewis began her career as a full-time freelance artist after completing an Associate Diploma of Fine Art in Newcastle in 1991. A solo exhibition of her work at the International Bird Convention in 1993 led to commissions from around Australia and overseas. It also led to an invitation to exhibit at a prestigious wildlife exhibition in Queensland. At the same exhibition the following year she was made feature artist, where her works (10) were sold between 1000 dollar and 8000 dollar.
