Dairy is synonymous with eradicating rural poverty, building rural economy, providing food and nutritional security. Dairy faces a challenge because of shortage of educated, trained and skilled manpower. In fact integration of agriculture and dairy farming has a strong potential for green energy and water use as well as in providing the 5F security. Strong knowledge economy and continuing skill development can fast track the dairy economy. With agriculture and dairy farming getting commercialized, there is need to find ways and means to control cost of milk production and processing, increase the proportion of milk outreach to processing sector from the existing 20-22% of the total milk production. As a country that has attained self-sufficiency inmilk production, India has to mark its presence in neighbouring milk deficit nations that import large volumes of milk and milk products. India must make its presence felt in exportsof milk products to countries in West Asia, South-East Asia, South Asia andNorth America. Strength in exports can come by applying latest tools of technology to improved per animal productivity, reduce the animal population, create hygienic environmentsfor ensuring safe and clean milk production, improving supply chain management, designing ofdairy products to meet international requirements, improving technologies, introducing mechanization and automation in producing ethnic dairy products and innovating the packaging of all types of dairy products. There is a growing demand for safe, nutritious, health-promoting, convenience milk products calling for value addition, product diversification and complete quality assurance.
