This work describes the potential importance of lignosulfonate solution in the recovery of petroleum from a partially depleted Deohal oil field of Upper Assam basin. The emulsion is oil in water type where the oleic phase is paraffin oil and aqueous phase is brine along with 0.34% Black Liquor in distilled water, is made to flow through the water flooded porous medium of well no NH2 obtained from a depth of 3856-3859 m. The present study will make an attempt to release the captured oil blobs from the porous media first by brine flooding and later by surfactant flooding. The surfactant is Black Liquor, a waste from Nowgong Paper Mill of Jagiroad, which is added to the aqueous phase of the emulsion. A quantitative analysis of the amount of captured oil that is released by brine and surfactant flooding is also done. The results after flooding experiments show that oil recovered by brine and surfactant flooding from the porous medium is 14.69 cc (49.92%) and 2.66 cc (9.04%) respectively when the pore volume of the core sample is 29.43 cc.
