Effect of different organic manures with varying levels of nitrogen on the growth and yield of ginger grown as intercrop in pre-bearing coconut garden

Afield experiment was conducted in a five-year-old coconut plantation with cv. East Coast Tall at Horticultural Research Station, Mondouri, BCKV during 2002 and 2003, to find out the effect of different organic manures on the growth and yield of ginger as intercrop. Two levels (25% and 50% substitution of inorganic source of nitrogen) of five organic manures, namely FYM, groundnut cake, mustard cake, neem cake and poultry manure were tried. Maximum plant height, leaf number, clump weight, net returnand B:C ratio were observed when 25% nitrogen has been incorporated through poultry manure and 75% N as urea but maximum, leaf number was recorded when total nitrogen was applied through inorganic source. In respect of yield and net return the next besttreatment was neem cake (1/2 N) + Urea (1/2 N) but as regard to B:C ratio the next best treatment was neem cake ('4 N) + Urea (% N) of coconut was observed. The percentage increase in height, leaf number and basal girth were 48.56, 47.18 and 43.50% respectively in intercropped block as compared to 41.17, 39.01 and 34.47% in the monocrop block.
