The studies on multiplication and development of Nephotettix virescens (Distant) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) were carried out on five commercial cultivars viz. PR113, PR114, PR115, PR116, along with a susceptible check TN1 in the glass houses during thekharif seasons at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. In free choice tests for non-preference (antixenosis), the number of eggs laid per plant on rice cultivars PR113, PR114, PR115, PR116 and TN1 was 81.73, 84.46, 60.73, 43.73 and 109.76, respectively and the number of nymphs settled per plant after 4 days of release was 2.86, 3.26, 2.91, 2.24, and 4.07, respectively. In the antibiosis studies, on the above mentioned rice cultivars, the nymphal duration was 16.22, 14.63, 18.79, 19.55 and 13.93 days along with nymphal survival of 76, 80, 68, 60 and 92 per cent, respectively. Thus the reduction in growth index was maximum on cultivar PR116. The sex ratio of 1: 0.89, 1:1.54, 1:0.69, 1: 0.63 and 1: 1.64 and the combined effect of antixenosis and antibiosis on population build-up per female was 564.60, 1527.40, 254.00, 213.40 and 1793.60 in the test cultivars PR113, PR114, PR115, PR116 and TN1, respectively. It can be concluded that cultivar PR116 is least suitable and TN1 is most suitable host formultiplication and development of N. virescens among the rice cultivars investigated.
