Milk Procurement Cost of Co-operative and Private sector Dairy Plants of Tamil Nadu — A Comparative Analysis

The study was based on the data collected from one purposively selected co-operative dairy plant and one private dairy plant of Salem district, Tamil Nadu for the financial year 2007-08. A sample of five transportation routes and ten co-operative societies/collection centres was purposively selected for the study from both the plants. All the three chilling centres attached to each plant were also taken up for the study. The overall average procurement cost per litre of milk was Rs.1.23 for the co-operative dairy plant and Rs.1.09 for the private dairy plant which was due to increased cost of milk transportation, chilling and reception. The milk collection cost was found to be lower (Re. 0.35/litre) for the co-operative dairy plant against Re. 0.38/litre for the private dairy plant. The cost component of transportation, chilling and reception on per litre basis was 40 paise, 28 paise and 20 paise respectively for the co-operative dairy plant and 34 paise, 24 paise and 12 paise respectively for theprivate milk collection centres. The procurement cost of co-operative dairy societies was higher than the private milk collection centres due to increased cost of milk transportation, chilling and reception.
