Source/description: Paratuberculosis is a chronic granulomatous enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). Susceptibility to MAP infection is thought to be controlled by a large number of genes 1–8 and environmental factors. In this regard, the bovine CD209 gene could be a promising new candidate gene for susceptibility to MAP infection in cattle. The CD209 molecule is the pattern recognition receptor and adhesion receptor of dendritic cells (DC), 9 and mycobacteria target CD209 to affect TLR4- mediated immune responses by impairing DC maturation and enhancing IL-10 production. 10 This work was undertaken with the main objective of extensively characterizing the variability in the bovine CD209 gene in the Holstein-Friesian (HF) breed.
