Versatile Enzymes : Beyond simple blending (1)

In today's market, many of the enzyme products being offered are simple mechanical blends of a few different enzymes with heterogeneous origins. These "blended" enzymes are designed to be "diet specific and animal specific", reflecting their narrow natural enzyme activity spectrum. These blended enzymes are inconvenient and create additional workloads for feed mills that are obligated to use different blended enzymes for different raw materials, feeds and animal species. Conversely, a multi-activityor "versatile" enzyme possessing a wide natural enzyme activity spectrum that can function on different raw materials, feeds and animal species would bring multiple advantages. This article discusses the different features and shortfalls of blended enzymes compared to versatile enzymes. Research has confirmed that single activity enzyme products are less effective than multi-activity enzyme products when considering a wide range of raw materials: cereals, cereal byproducts, oilseed meals, etc. It is well known that complex substrates occurring in feed can be more effectively degraded by a host of synergistic enzymes than a single enzyme targeting a specific bond type. In order to achieve multi-activity, many enzyme companies mix or blend different heterogeneous enzymes ( most blended products typically possess 2 to 5 activities) that are marketed as being "diet specific" as well as "animal specific". This article illust tes the shortfalls of blended enzyme products in comparison with nu.urally versatile enzyme products containing a wide spectrum of main and ancillary activities that function across grains and animal species.
