On June 25, 1998, the United States became the first signatory to the United Nations/Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) agreement concerning establishment of global technical regulations for wheeled vehicles, equipment, and parts. This agreement was negotiated under the auspices of the UN/ECE under the leadership of the United States, the European Community, and Japan. It provides for the establishment of global technical regulations regarding safety, emissions, energy conservation, and theft prevention. The covered equipment and parts include, but are not limited to, exhaust systems, tires, engines, acoustic shields, antitheft alarms, warning devices, and child restraint systems.
