Mike Syddell visited Allegiance Mining's nickel prospects in Tasmania.Working along a 3km line of shallow, last century workings of pods of nickel sulphide just north of Zeehan, on Tasmania's western coast, is Allegiance Mining NL.The Melba Hats open cut operations of the 1890s represent Australia's first nickel mine, and foundations bricks and remnants of rail trolleys are scattered through the thick regrowth. Historic production was 6,500t of ore at 9.7 percent nickel and 4.7 percent copper to a depth of no more than 50m.
