There's also a color room located on the floor above the color kitchen. Stuffed inside its old drawers are an enormous number of cotton scraps called tilkku (quilt) in Finnish. Anna-Kaisa Jaaksola who works as a product developer says, "Tilkku are our unique color samples, which amount to about 10,000 colors at present. Compared to the Pantone color that has about two to three thousand colors, the number of tilkku is overwhelming and it's growing even as we talk." Unique colors are usually given suitable names, but since colors are created on a daily basis at Marimekko, they are not named. Each blend of colors, however, is called the "recipe," and the blend of dyes is displayed right next to each tilkku. "At times, designers these days bring in color images, for example like a piece of driftwood, rather than design drawings. So in that case, we analyze the object with a spectrophotometer and try to create a colorthat is as faithful as possible to that image" (Jaaksola). Before the designers decide on the colors, she says they visit this room and look through the tikklu.
