In 1982, Toyota celebrated its 25th anniversary of selling vehicles in the United States. The company that began by selling just 287 Toyopet cars - and one Land Cruiser - in its first year here had, over the ensuing decades, become the number-one import brand in the country. "By 1986, Toyota had sold 1,025,305 vehicles, making it the first import automaker to sell more than one million vehicles in America in a year," says Susan Sanborn, curator of the Toyota USA Museum.
