In the triad markets of Europe, the US and Japan, vastly different traffic and legal situations prevail which either favour or hamper specific technological solutions. What will be the drive technology of the future? Petrol, diesel or hybrid - or a combination of these systems, in addition to a mixture of alternative fuels such as natural gas or the use of biofuels and hydrogen? The reduction in fuel consumption and emissions represents a basic guideline for all development endeavours. However, exciting driving and comfort are and will continue to be important criteria. Ultimately, the most appropriate overall combined solution for market establishment is one that is tailored to individual market requirements, as well as to environmental and operating conditions. There is no single quick-fix solution.
