Studies in the red gums of south-eastern Australia with particular emphasis on Eucalyptus subser. Erythroxyla.

The red gums as a taxonomic group are discussed and aspects of their morphology are clarified, particularly the seeds, seedlings, disc of the fruit and glaucescence. The diagnostic characters and distribution of the red gum species in New South Wales and Victoria are treated in detail. The study concentrates on Eucalyptus subseries Erythroxyla (Eucalyptus series Excertae (Tereticornes)), of the tablelands, western slopes, plains and south coast of New South Wales, and of adjoining areas of central and eastern Victoria and of Gippsland in particular. The red gums of the Mootwingee Hills are discussed and considered to be of ambiguous identity with affinity to E. camaldulensis and E. vicina. A recently described subspecies from Gippsland, Eucalyptus tereticornis subsp. mediana, is discussed in relation to the typical subspecies and to E. camaldulensis. The red gums of far south coastal New South Wales appear to be mixed populations, and individual trees are considered to be either E. tereticornisor variants best attributed to E. tereticornis/E. amplifolia intergrades. Unusual forms of forest red gum (E. tereticornis sens. lat.) from the Hunter Valley and the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales are discussed.
