Monitoring the world's longest fences - to keep wild dogs out

For more than a century authorities in Australia have invested in fences as a first-line defence against wild dogs and other pest species. State-owned fences exist in all mainland states, except the Northern Territory, isolating the main agriculturalareas and restricting movement of dogs from uncontrolled locations into areas where more intensive control programs are in place. In a 2004 report Counting the cost: Impact of Invasive animals in Australia, Dr Ross McLeod estimated that the cost to landholders and governments of building and maintaining barrier fencing was around 10 million dollar per year. In Queensland local government and landholders are responsible for maintaining the fences. The 1.8 million dollar cost of the fence is shared 50:50between local and state government.
