Livestock manure boosts soil, cuts crop costs

The costs of glyphosate, fertiliser and a host of farm inputs have increased in response to high oil and energy costs. But according to former farm consultant Dr Peter Wylie, despite the higher costs, farm profitability is still well ahead of 2006 dueto higher grain prices (table 1). "Wheat profitability has improved the most - from a low base and with a much bigger increase in price," Wylie says. "The wheat price at harvest time is uncertain because it has come down $100 per tonne in recent months. "The break-even price for sorghum on the Darling Downs has increased from $104/t in 2006 to $158/t now while the break-even price for wheat on the Western Downs has increased from $140/t to $175/t."
