NEW BARLEY varieties are vital for the future development of the Australian barley industry. A successful collaboration between industry members, in developing varieties, is necessary to meet the requirements of Australia's key barley and malt markets. Barley research organisations, marketing boards, grain traders, maltsters, brewers and the intensive livestock industry have joined forces with Australia's barley growers to take premium barley from glasshouses and laboratories to growers' paddocks and onto consumers' tables. This article provides an overview of the latest malting and feed barley varieties that have been released to Australian grain growers.
