Rural and regional communities are becoming more proactive on issues such as soil health and water quality. There is greater awareness of the effects of over-use of chemicals, the need for regenerative land management techniques and vast improvementsin the recycling of waste. These factors augur well for the integrity of future food production systems. One challenge for society is to work with the farming community to restore the ecological and hence food and fibre productive base on which the nation and tens of millions of consumers overseas depend on for flour, red meats, vegetable oils, pulses, and textiles.
